Gift wrapping

Radian lets shoppers add gift wrap with a switch, without an app. The wrap is a normal product in your store, for example "Gift wrapping" at $12, so its price, tax and inventory work like any product and it shows on the order in Shopify Admin.

Choose how it applies:

Each item: every product line in the cart gets its own switch, Gift wrap this item. Turning it on adds one wrap per unit of that product, labelled with the product it is for, and the wrap follows that product: same quantity, and removed when the product is removed.

The whole order: one switch above the subtotal adds a single wrap for the entire order, with your own label and text.

How to set it up

Step 1: Create the gift wrap product

1. In Shopify Admin, go to Products > Add product.
2. Name it, for example Gift wrapping, set the price, and add an image of the wrap. The image shows in the cart.
3. Set it to Active and make it available on the Online Store sales channel, or it can't be added to the cart.
4. Turn off Track quantity (or keep stock above 0): when the wrap sells out, the switches hide.
5. Keep it out of your collections so it doesn't show in collection grids. To hide it from storefront search too, add the metafield seo.hidden with the value 1.

Step 2: Turn on gift wrapping

1. In the theme editor, go to Theme settings > Cart and scroll to Gift wrapping.
2. In Gift wrap product (1), choose the product from step 1.
3. Under Gift wrapping applies to, choose Each item or The whole order.

Step 3: Choose which products can be wrapped (Each item)

1. Set Offer gift wrap on to Every product, or to Chosen products only.
2. With Chosen products only, mark the products that can be wrapped in one of two ways: add the tag gift-wrap to the product, or create a product metafield custom.gift_wrap of type True or false and set it to true.
3. Products that aren't chosen show no switch.

Step 4: Write the label and text

1. For The whole order, write the Label, for example Gift wrap this order.
2. Write the Text shown under the switch, for example Recycled paper, a cotton ribbon and a handwritten card. It shows under the whole-order switch and in the product page block.
3. For Each item, the switch reads Gift wrap this item and the wrap's price, in the shopper's language.

Step 5: Show the switches in the cart drawer

1. Keep Show in the cart drawer on to show the switches in the cart drawer: under each product for Each item, or above the subtotal for The whole order.
2. Turn it off to offer gift wrap only on the product page.

Step 6: Add the Gift wrap block to the product page

1. Open a product in the theme editor and click Add block in the Product section.
2. Choose Gift wrap and drag it above the Buy buttons block.
3. The block has no settings of its own: it uses Theme settings > Cart > Gift wrapping. When the shopper turns the switch on and adds the product to the cart, the wrap is added with it.

How it works

• Each item: the wrap line stores the key of the product line it belongs to in a hidden property, plus a visible Gift wrap for property with the product name (and variant). The cart drawer shows the wrap right under its product, without its own quantity buttons; the wrap always takes the product's quantity.
• Changing the product's quantity changes the wrap's quantity. Removing the product removes its wrap. Turning the switch off removes the wrap.
• The whole order: the switch adds one wrap line. Adding from the product page block adds a wrap only if the cart has none yet.
• The product page block shows only when the wrap product is set and available, and the product can be wrapped (with Chosen products only: tagged gift-wrap or with custom.gift_wrap set to true). The wrap product never offers wrap for itself.
• The cart page lists wrap lines like other lines, with the Gift wrap for note. The switches are in the cart drawer and on the product page.
• On the order in Shopify Admin, each wrap line shows Gift wrap for: product name, so you know which item to wrap.

Troubleshooting

The switch doesn't show.

Check that a Gift wrap product is chosen, the product is active, on the Online Store channel and in stock, and, with Chosen products only, that the product has the gift-wrap tag or custom.gift_wrap set to true.

The wrap product shows in collections or search.

Remove it from your collections, and add the metafield seo.hidden with the value 1 to hide it from storefront search.

Shoppers can change the wrap quantity on the cart page.

If the quantities stop matching, the cart drawer sets the wrap back to its product's quantity the next time it opens.
